Ocean-View Mandel Zandra EX-95 @ 16 yrs
The Cow Who Turned a Chance into a Legacy

Every great cow family has a beginning. Sometimes it starts with years of planning. Sometimes it starts with a little faith and a well-timed bid.

"Can she walk?"

That was the first question Marvin asked when Bill Kent called to tell him he had just bought an Excellent cow for $1,600.

The cow was Moore Farms Valiant Smurf. She had been scheduled to sell carrying a calf by Ocean-View Sexation, but shortly before the sale she came back in heat. She was bred right back to Sexation, but many buyers saw only uncertainty. Reluctant to take a chance on a cow that might not be settled, they let her go.

Bill saw something different.

He told Marvin, "She's a good one."

And he was right.

After making the 3,000-mile journey to California, Smurf was checked and confirmed pregnant to that sale-day service. The resulting calf was Sexy Zandra—the dam of a young cow who would go on to leave an unforgettable mark on the Ocean View breeding program.

That cow was Ocean-View Mandel Zandra.

There was a time when visitors to Ocean View would ask a simple question: "Who is your favorite?" For years, the answer was difficult. Lindy Sheen and Mandel Zandra stood as two of the most influential cows ever to walk the farm. Both represented everything Ocean View valued in a cow family—style, production, longevity, and the ability to consistently create the next generation.

But Zandra was special.

Through daughters and granddaughters, her influence spread throughout the herd and across the globe in others.

The story of Mandel Zandra is proof that breeding success often comes from recognizing opportunity when others see risk. A cow that many overlooked at a sale produced a daughter. That daughter produced Zandra. And Zandra produced a legacy that still shapes the Ocean View herd today.

Looking back, it's remarkable to think that one of Ocean View's most influential families traces back to a simple question asked over the phone:

"Can she walk?"

Thankfully, she could.

And because she did, generations of Ocean View cattle continue to carry the Zandra name forward.
