At Ocean View, we often say that great cow families don't just create great cows—they create generations of great cows.
When we analyzed the maternal lines behind the cows currently standing in our herd, the results were remarkable. Those pedigrees average 12.8 generations deep, tracing back as far as 80 years of breeding history, and the cows behind them average an impressive 90.6 points. Those numbers didn't happen by accident. They are the result of decades of selecting for the traits that matter most: longevity, production, type, and the ability to consistently transmit those qualities to the next generation.
Strong families breed on.
A perfect example is this 6th generation EX who goes 14 gens deep. Ocean-View She Said Yes EX-93-2E, the full sister to Ocean-View Shez A Sassy EX-94. On her own, She Said Yes has been a tremendous cow making over 60,000 pounds of milk her last lactation and already having made over 190,000 pounds of lifetime milk.
But her pedigree tells the bigger story.
Behind She Said Yes stand 14 consecutive generations of Excellent and Very Good cows averaging more than 90 points. The direct maternal line averages approximately 90.8 points, stretching from today's generation all the way back to our foundation Ideograph Burkgov Steps EX-90-2E GMD, a cow whose influence can still be found throughout the Ocean-View herd.
The family is loaded with proof that elite genetics can endure for generations. Her dam, Damion Sassy EX-95, produced over 211,000 pounds of milk. Her maternal sisters include Sterling Silver EX-94, the 2019 Holstein USA Star of the Breed and National Elite Performer; Sanchez Sassy EX-94, with more than 248,000 pounds of lifetime milk and over 11,000 pounds of fat; and Dundee Sassy EX-93, with more than 303,000 pounds of lifetime milk.
These aren't isolated successes. They are the result of a family that continues to deliver generation after generation.
In an era when many pedigrees are built around the latest sire, the Ocean View program continues to be built around something more enduring—the cow families themselves. Because while bulls come and go, the strongest maternal lines continue to produce results year after year, decade after decade.
That's the power of breeding decisions made not for the next generation, but for the next ten generations.
