Some cows earn their names from their pedigree.
Some earn them from the show ring.
Ocean-View Zs Heartbreaker earned hers before she was ever a week old.
It was a bitterly cold winter day when she was born.
As the first calf from Ocean-View Got The Z Factor EX-92-2E, she was a calf we had been eagerly anticipating. Everything seemed normal at first. But when we went to feed her, something wasn't right.
She wouldn't stand.
At first, we couldn't figure out why.
The more we watched her struggle, the more concerned we became. Being breeders, our minds immediately started racing through possibilities. Diamondback on Doorman was an especially close mating?
Had we missed something?
Was this some strange genetic issue?
Was this a case of linebreeding gone wrong?
The answer turned out to be much simpler.
Heartbreaker had broken her leg.
So into the back of the heated car she went for a trip to the vet. We expected x-rays. Instead, the veterinarian took one look and said,
"I don't need an x-ray. That's a complete break."
Her left front leg was broken just above the knee.
Not exactly the start you envision for the next generation of one of your favorite cow families.
A cast was applied, and we brought her home with plenty of hope and more than a few prayers.
For weeks, our little calf hopped her way around the pen. She learned how to get around on three legs and somehow never lost her attitude.
When the cast finally came off, another challenge appeared. A small bone fragment had sloughed away and an infection had started.
Again, we worried.
Again, she fought through it.
Today, you would never know.
If you watched Heartbreaker walk across the barnyard, you would never guess the story behind her name.
You certainly wouldn't guess she would grow into an Excellent-90 cow carrying one of the most influential maternal pedigrees in the Ocean View herd.
And perhaps that's fitting.
Because resilience has always been part of the Zandra family story.
Heartbreaker traces directly to Ocean-View Mandel Zandra EX-95-2E GMD, the brood cow that established one of the most successful maternal lines in Ocean View history.
Behind her stand ten generations of Excellent and Very Good cows averaging 90.5 points, including seven Excellent dams, four Gold Medal Dams, and two Dams of Merit.
The family combines style, longevity, and exceptional component production.
Her own record reflects exactly that:
36,840 lbs milk • 5.7% Fat • 3.2% Protein
More than 2,100 pounds of butterfat from a young cow.
That kind of component production isn't an accident.
It is the result of generations of cows breeding true.
Her dam, Got The Z Factor EX-92-2E, produced over 203,000 pounds lifetime milk while averaging an incredible 5.5% lifetime fat.
Her granddam, Atwood Zandra EX-93-2E, was a National Elite Performer with over 201,000 pounds lifetime milk and 4.7% lifetime fat.
Her third dam, O Man Zabrina EX-91-2E GMD DOM, came from the only unit of O Man ever used at Ocean View and recorded 37,200 lbs milk at 5.0% fat.
And behind them all stands Mandel Zandra EX-95-2E GMD, the cow who transformed a family into a legacy.
Today, Heartbreaker is writing her own chapter.
She is also the dam of two heifers offered in our Tag Sale both by Master!
She is the dam of Ocean-View Heartbreaker Red, available through Triple Hil Sires as part of their Masterpiece Collection.
She is also the dam of Ocean-View Zandra In Red, who will be offerd in our sale and is the first red descendant of Mandel Zandra known to us.
For a family that has influenced generations of black-and-white cattle, that makes Zandra In Red a unique milestone.
But color isn't what makes her exciting.
What makes her exciting is that she carries forward everything that made the family successful in the first place.
The same maternal strength.
The same cow power.
The same ability to combine style, production, and exceptional components.
The story of the Zandra family began with a chance purchase and a simple question:
"Can she walk?"
The story of Heartbreaker began with a broken leg and a lot of uncertainty.
Both stories had the same ending.
A cow that refused to quit.
And a family that continues to move forward generation after generation.
